Why would you still pay thousands of euros for a website that then stands still?

Having a professional website built easily costs a few thousand euros. You choose an agency, approve a design and a few weeks later your new site is online.

After that, little happens for years. The copy stays as it is, the technology ages and new wishes end up on a list for later. After five or six years the whole process starts again, with a new quote.

We think that is a strange way to treat your most important place online. Why should a website stand still on the day it is finished? We choose websites whose technical foundation keeps developing, even when you don't have the time or budget for it for a while.

The digital world doesn't wait until you have budget again

Search engines constantly adjust how they assess websites. AI assistants are changing how people find and compare businesses: more and more often, a search starts with a question rather than a keyword. And visitors expect a website to load quickly, work well on their phone and get them where they need to be in a few taps.

So a website that was excellent five years ago is not automatically still competitive. The design can be fine while the technology underneath lags behind.

While you rely on the website you had built five years ago, a competitor may be working on a faster site, a smarter enquiry form or better answers to the questions customers ask. Far from everyone does that. Those who do stand out.

A modern website is therefore not a finished product. It is a digital environment that needs maintenance and improvement, just like the rest of your business.

What are you actually buying with a one-off web project?

There are excellent web agencies, and some of them keep working on their clients' sites after delivery. Still, the standard model is a project with a beginning and an end. That model deserves a few critical questions.

What are you actually paying those thousands of euros for? For a nice design, or for a website that demonstrably delivers something? How do you know after launch whether you are easier to find? And what happens when the technology becomes outdated after two or three years?

After delivery, things often start to chafe. A new page, an extra service or a smarter feature goes through whoever built the site. A quote follows, then a schedule and an invoice. So you put it off, until a completely new website seems more logical than having everything adjusted separately. Why should every step forward have to be a new project?

“But our customers come through word of mouth?”

We hear that a lot, and it is often true. Not every business needs its website to bring in enquiries every day.

Do look at what happens after such a recommendation, though. Someone hears about your business, looks you up and sees a ten-year-old design, photos of a team that no longer looks like that and services you no longer offer. That says nothing about the quality of your work, but it does say something about the impression you leave.

Your website doesn't have to be your most important sales channel to matter for how you come across.

01 / Two approaches

Build once, then keep improving

The difference isn't in the launch, but in the years after it.

Traditional

The cycle of the one-off project

  • A large investment up front
  • A new website and a handover
  • After that, limited development, often quote by quote
  • Hosting and maintenance often invoiced separately
  • The technology ages and wishes stay on the shelf
  • Investing again after a few years

TokoWorks

A foundation that keeps developing

  • Design and build are included in the monthly fee
  • After launch you manage the content yourself
  • Hosting, maintenance, monitoring and backups taken care of
  • A platform update every two weeks
  • Speed, components and ease of use keep getting better
  • Expand within the same environment, without starting again

Build a good foundation once. Then keep improving.

That is how we approach websites. We design and build your website on the platform we develop ourselves. On the day your site goes live, the work on that foundation doesn't stop.

We work continuously on new components, speed, security, how sites look on mobile and the technology underneath. A platform update is released every two weeks. Because all websites run on the same foundation, your site benefits from that development without us having to rebuild it.

One distinction matters here. Platform development is work on the technical foundation of all websites: updates, performance, security, new components and general features. That is included in your subscription. Work on your own website, such as new copy, SEO content, extra designs, conversion improvements or custom work, is something else. You do that yourself or we agree it together. A new component becomes available, but doesn't appear on your pages by itself. Whether and where you use it is up to you.

What that looks like in practice

Take a fictional installation company that has a professional website built for €2,500. On day one it looks good. Three years later the company offers new services, the project photos are outdated and a simple decision tool would help visitors find their way better. Changes cost money and time, the diary is full, so it stays on the shelf. After six years the website no longer fits the business. That isn't an average, but it is a pattern many business owners will recognise.

On the TokoWorks platform the same company starts with the same professional foundation. The new services get their own page, which the company adds itself, and it replaces the photos in a few minutes. Meanwhile the technology underneath is updated every two weeks. If that decision tool comes along, we build it in the same environment.

You don't have to become a web designer

You manage copy, photos, pages and blogs yourself, without programming knowledge and without a quote. The technology is our job. And one technical foundation doesn't mean every site looks the same. For installation company RPS Bouw & Techniek we translated the colours from their logo into a theme of their own, with real photos of their own work. Since then, RPS has been updating its copy and photos itself.

02 / What's included

What the monthly fee covers, and what it doesn't

You get the platform's development along with it. Work done only for your website is optimisation or custom work.

  • Included

Design and build, use of the platform, platform updates, hosting, technical maintenance, security updates, monitoring, daily backups and the helpdesk.

  • Do it yourself

You manage copy, photos, pages, forms, navigation, blogs and SEO settings yourself, within the limits of your package. No quote is involved.

  • Quoted separately

A migration of your current website, integrations with external systems, custom work and optimisation of your own site, such as new content or extra designs. For these you get a proposal in advance.

Delivering a website is not the same as making a website successful

An expensive design is no guarantee of better findability, more visitors or more enquiries. So don't judge a website only on the day it is delivered, but on what it means for your business a few years on.

That calls for measuring, learning and targeted improvement. Which pages get read? Where do visitors drop off? Which questions come in through the form, and which don't?

The platform gives you the means to do that. You set page titles, meta descriptions, redirects and share images yourself, and the sitemap updates itself. From Business Pro onwards analytics is included, with a quarterly check in which we look together at usage, findability and conversion. We don't promise better search results or more revenue. We do promise a foundation on which you can keep improving in a targeted way, instead of starting over every time.

Is a subscription always cheaper?

No, and that isn't the point either. The monthly fee is the arrangement that makes ongoing development possible, without a large investment up front. It is still an ongoing expense, and your package runs for at least twelve months.

So calculate over several years. In our article on what a professional business website costs we assume €5,000 to €25,000 one-off for a web agency, plus €1,000 to €5,000 per year for hosting, maintenance and changes. Over five years you'll then spend at least €10,000. Business Pro costs €99 per month, €5,940 excl. VAT over five years. Business Lite comes to €2,940. That includes design, build, hosting, maintenance and five years of platform development.

The biggest difference is in what you have after those five years. With a one-off project, you have a website that is due for replacement. On the platform, your site runs on a foundation that has kept getting better all that time.

Built for today, developed further for tomorrow

Your business changes all the time. So you don't build a good website just for the day it goes live: it keeps developing in the years that follow, without a new project costing thousands of euros every five years.

03 / Questions

Frequently asked questions about a website per month

Are there really no set-up costs?

Design, build and set-up are included in the monthly fee. If you already have a website whose pages, copy and redirects we need to move over, we quote that migration separately. You'll hear about it in advance.

Do I get new features automatically?

Improvements to the platform itself, such as speed, security and technical updates, apply to all websites. New components become available within your package. Whether and where you use them is up to you, or something you decide together with us. An integration, portal or other feature that we build specifically for your organisation is custom work. We quote that separately.

How long am I tied in?

All packages have a minimum term of twelve months. Prices are excl. VAT. On the pricing and packages page you can see what each package includes.

Can I change everything myself?

You manage copy, photos, pages, forms and navigation yourself, without technical knowledge. How many pages, administrators and forms you have depends on your package.

What happens if I want to stop?

Your website stays online for as long as your subscription runs. A month before the end date we let you know that your contract is ending, so you can decide at your own pace.

If you don't renew, your website stays online free of charge for another 30 days after the end date. During that time you wrap everything up properly, for example by having your data exported or moving your domain name. After that the website goes offline. Even then you can still come back: within three months we can usually switch your website back on, with a new contract.

Want to keep your website online but no longer work on it? Then you switch to a cheaper maintenance subscription. Hosting, security and the necessary technical maintenance remain taken care of. Changes fall outside it: you can no longer edit it yourself and no new features are added. If you later want to get going again, you switch back to a regular subscription.

Copy, photos and logos that you supplied remain yours, and on request we provide them in a common format. Your domain name is also separate from the website. The platform and the software your website runs on remain TokoWorks'.
